Your Appliances Determine How Fast the Battery Drains
The biggest factor affecting backup duration is usually the amount of power your home consumes during an outage.
Lights, fans, internet equipment, and other relatively small loads consume considerably less electricity than air conditioners, electric heaters, water pumps, irons, microwaves, and other high-power appliances.
This means two households with identical batteries can experience very different backup times. A home using only essential appliances may get significantly longer backup than a home attempting to maintain normal high-consumption operation throughout an outage.
Why a 5kWh Battery Does Not Mean Five Hours of Backup
A common misunderstanding is that a 5kWh battery automatically provides five hours of electricity. Battery capacity and backup time are related, but they are not the same thing.
As a simplified example, a 5kWh battery supplying an average 1kW load would theoretically have considerably more runtime than the same battery supplying a 3kW load. Real-world runtime will be lower or different because of usable capacity limits, conversion losses, changing appliance loads, battery protection settings, and other operating conditions.
The important question is therefore not simply "How many kWh is the battery?" It is "How many kWh do I need for the appliances I want to operate?"
Solar Panels Can Extend Daytime Backup
Battery backup behaves differently when load-shedding occurs during daylight hours.
If your solar panels are producing sufficient electricity, some or all of the home's consumption may be supplied directly from solar generation instead of the battery. Surplus solar energy may also be available to recharge the battery, depending on the system configuration.
During evening or nighttime outages, there is no solar production, so the battery becomes the primary stored energy source. This is why an identical outage can have a very different impact depending on when it occurs.
Inverter Efficiency Also Matters
The electricity stored in a battery cannot simply be treated as identical to the electricity ultimately available to household appliances. Energy passes through the inverter and other system components, where some conversion losses naturally occur.
